After building my first violin via a local Instrument Making adult education course I was accepted onto the three year full time Musical Instrument Technology course (Dip. strings) at the Huddersfield College  of Music which I successfully completed in 1987 leaving with distinctions and the college award for "outstanding work". The course specialized in the construction, repair, restoration and set-up of all stringed instruments including violins, cellos, double bass, guitar and mandolin together with a range of ethnic, folk and early instruments such as viols and lute's, etc.

Following completion of the full time course I returned to the local evening class where I assisted and helped students develop their individual projects.

During this period I set up my own workshop in Sheffield and my business was established in 1989. Since that time I have carried out work for private individuals, groups, orchestras, music retailers and local authorities in the Yorkshire area and beyond.

I have developed and continue to run a very busy workshop which specializes in the repair and restoration of all stringed instruments. I have established a reputation for quality work and excellence and provide this at a fair and competitive price.

.....My aim is to ensure that every instrument that I work on is restored and set-up to a standard so as to reach it's highest potential, whether it is a childs' "starter" violin or a two hundred year old "master" instrument, all receive the same amount of care and dilligence.

"Geoff transformed my son's badly neglected old violin through his superb craftsmanship and restorative skills into a really desirable instrument. The work was completed within the promised timescale and the very reasonable quote was similarly accurate. To visit him in his incredible workshop is a revelation; thank goodness such expertise continues to exist. And he is such a friendly and helpful gentleman, too."

"Quick response to setting up my 3/4 size double bass. All done and dusted in a couple of hours. The upright now plays and sounds great. I cant recommend this service enough. Everything is explained clearly and a quote is given before any work is started. All done at a high standard and good price. Excellent service and workmanship with friendly advice and ongoing support.... :-)"

"I am very pleased with the work of String Instrument Repairs. The service was excellent, friendly, reliable, trustworthy and had a very high standard.
I took a derelict violin and it returned in a brilliant and working condition. It is clear that a lot of effort and hard work was put into restoring it as it came back completely refurbished. The work was done to a very high professional standard and I am extremely happy with the outcome.
I would certainly recommend String Instrument Repairs to any other string users both.
Finally, String Instrument Repairs gets a 5 star rating from me."

"What a joy it is to find someone who can be trusted to complete a job on time, to an excellent standard and for a reasonable price. Mr Briggs is a meticulous craftsman, with a superb eye for detail, who has given my battered and neglected violin and bow a new lease of life. So resonant is the sound and lustrous the appearance of my rejuvenated instrument that I have even started practising scales again! A gem of a business, run by a lovely gentleman."
